Ireland's Major Pilgrimage Sites Unite for 'Pilgrim Passport' Initiative to mark Jubilee Year 2025
In an exciting collaboration, Lough Derg, Knock Shrine, and Croagh Patrick are proud to announce the launch of the 'Pilgrim Passport', a unique and innovative initiative designed to mark the significant occasion of Jubilee Year 2025.
This special year, declared by Pope Francis as a time of spiritual renewal under the theme: Pilgrims of Hope, presents the perfect opportunity for Ireland's major pilgrimage sites to come together and create a memorable experience for pilgrims from far and wide.
The 'Pilgrim Passport' is a bespoke booklet that encourages visitors to embark on a spiritual journey across Ireland, exploring a rich Christian heritage and reliving the pilgrim tradition that has been a rich heritage documented back to medieval times.
By visiting each of the three iconic pilgrimage sites – Croagh Patrick and Knock Shrine, both in County Mayo, and Lough Derg in County Donegal – pilgrims can get their passport stamped, serving as a poignant reminder of their journey.
"We are thrilled to join forces with our friends at Knock Shrine and Croagh Patrick to bring this extraordinary initiative to life," said Monsignor La Flynn, Prior of Lough Derg. "Pilgrimage, especially in a Jubilee Year, invites individuals to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with the deeper things,” and commenting that in this part of the world, “we are so lucky to be able to do this amidst the beauty and tranquillity of Ireland's sacred landscapes."
Fr. Richard Gibbons, PP, Rector of Knock Shrine, added: "As we celebrate Jubilee Year 2025, we remember the profound impact that pilgrimage has had on Irish people throughout history. This collaborative effort allows us to honour that legacy while fostering a deeper sense of the collective faith and community among pilgrims from all walks of life."
Commenting on the initiative, Fr. John Kenny, Adm, Westport stated: "Croagh Patrick is honoured to be part of this historic partnership. The Pilgrim Passport offers an inspiring way for people to explore their faith and connect with Ireland's stunning natural beauty."
To further enrich the pilgrim experience, the sites will host several special events throughout Jubilee Year 2025 as well as their normal offerings to pilgrims tying into the theme of the Jubilee, “Pilgrims of Hope”. These will include guided pilgrimages and retreats, talks, workshops, concerts, and exhibitions highlighting the unique history, religious and cultural significance of each location.
